Whitefish is the Flathead Valley’s most built-out tourism town: a walkable downtown, Whitefish Lake and City Beach, and Whitefish Mountain Resort a few miles up Big Mountain Road. Glacier National Park’s West Entrance is about 27 miles / about 40 minutes away by road (routing estimate; see also Where to Stay Near Glacier). Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) is about 12 miles from town and about 30 minutes from the ski resort (Whitefish Mountain Resort: Getting Here; Where to Stay Near Glacier).

This guide covers how to get here, the mountain, the lake, downtown seasons, lodging, the city 3% resort tax (and the separate Big Mountain district tax), and how Whitefish compares with Kalispell and Columbia Falls. For park reservations and timing, see the Glacier trip planner, Best Time to Visit Glacier, and the NPS Glacier news page for access rules. Living costs in the valley: Cost of living in Kalispell & the Flathead. Town page: /montana-towns/whitefish/.

Glacier National Park from Whitefish

Whitefish is a west-side base. Plan roughly:

RouteDistance / timeSource
Whitefish → West Glacier (West Entrance)~27 mi / ~40 minRouting estimate (OSRM)
Whitefish → Many Glacier Hotel~130 mi / ~3 hrSame
Whitefish → Polebridge (North Fork)~47 mi / ~1.5 hrSame

Going-to-the-Sun Road’s alpine section is seasonal. 2027 vehicle-reservation and shuttle rules had not been announced as of October 28, 2026; watch the NPS Glacier news page. For month-by-month road and crowd patterns, see Best Time to Visit Glacier.

If you want a guided day into the park without managing parking, compare a guided west-side Glacier driving tour from West Glacier. That is a west-side tour from West Glacier. Check the listing’s itinerary for exactly what it covers, and confirm the operator is authorized to work in the park.

Whitefish Lake and City Beach

City Beach is the city’s public beach on Whitefish Lake at 30 Lakeside Blvd. (about 2 acres). The Parks & Facilities listing includes a public swimming area, boat launch, four reservable gazebos, seasonal restrooms, picnic tables, a concession stand, and paddleboard and kayak rentals. City parks are open 5 a.m.–11 p.m. (City of Whitefish Parks & Facilities).

Boat-launch rules, aquatic invasive species checks and fees change by season—use the city’s Boat Launch & Concessions page before you trailer a boat.

Downtown and seasons

Downtown Whitefish (Central Avenue and nearby streets) concentrates restaurants, shops and lodging within walking distance of the Amtrak depot area. Summer pairs lake days with Glacier day trips. Fall is quieter on the mountain but still busy on peak weekends. Winter centers on the ski resort and the free town–mountain shuttle. Spring is shoulder season: some mountain dining closes, and Going-to-the-Sun Road’s alpine section is usually still closed.

Resort taxes (verify on the city’s and district’s pages)

Whitefish visitors can hit two separate 3% resort taxes, depending on where they spend:

DistrictRateWhat it covers (summary)Source
City of Whitefish3%Lodging, retail, bars, restaurants; ordinance also covers ski-resort goods/services and defined luxuries inside the cityCity of Whitefish Resort Tax
Big Mountain Resort Area District (mountain / fire-district area—not the city boundary)3%, effective June 1, 2025–May 31, 2045Lodging, restaurants/food service, bars, destination ski/recreation, and luxuries per district ordinanceBMRAD Administrative Ordinance 2024-1 §5 (PDF); BMRAD FAQ; also Does Montana Have a Sales Tax?

The city page states voters extended the city tax through January 31, 2045, and allocates revenue among property-tax relief, streets/utilities, community housing, paths/parks, the Whitefish Trail and merchant administration (City of Whitefish). BMRAD stresses that its boundary is not the same as the city’s and that short-term rental hosts must remit to the correct district (BMRAD FAQ).

On top of resort tax, lodging still pays Montana’s 8% state lodging tax (MT DOR). Montana has no general statewide sales tax.

This section is general information, not tax advice. Businesses should follow the city ordinance and BMRAD Administrative Ordinance 2024-01.
