December is when Montana’s winter trip patterns lock in: major ski areas open (or have just opened), Yellowstone’s oversnow season starts mid-month, Glacier stays limited to plowed valley roads, and holiday events fill downtown calendars. Daylight is short—about 8.5 hours near the solstice at Bozeman latitudes—and valley highs often sit near freezing while mountain towns and West Yellowstone run colder (NCEI 1991–2020 normals; solar day-length estimate for ~45–48°N).

This guide covers weather normals for five towns, what’s open at Yellowstone and Glacier, 2026–27 ski opening dates from resort sites, winter driving via MDT, packing, and holiday events confirmed on official pages for 2026. Deeper dives: Yellowstone in winter from Montana, Montana ski resorts compared, Big Sky things to do, West Yellowstone, and Montana hot springs.

December weather normals (1991–2020)

Monthly normals from NOAA NCEI’s 1991–2020 dataset. Temperatures in °F; precipitation in inches; snowfall in inches where the station publishes a snow normal.

West Yellowstone’s Gateway station is colder and wetter than the valley airports; at 3.05 inches, December is the wettest month in its normals. Billings runs milder at the airport than the mountain gateways.

Daylight and packing

Around the December solstice, daylight at Bozeman’s latitude (~45.7°N) is about 8 hours 40 minutes (calculated from sunrise and sunset geometry); farther north near Kalispell (~48.2°N) it is about 8 hours 20 minutes. Plan outdoor time for midday when possible.

Packing (general): layered insulating clothing, a waterproof outer shell, warm hat and gloves, traction footwear for ice, and a headlamp or flashlight for early dusk. For Yellowstone boardwalks and parking lots, NPS notes icy conditions and recommends traction aids (NPS Explore in Winter). This is not a personal gear endorsement—match kit to your itinerary and the current forecast.
