There is no single best month for Glacier. It depends on whether you need Going-to-the-Sun Road open over Logan Pass, how much snow and mud you will tolerate, and how packed you want the parking lots. July and August get the most visitors and the fullest road access. May and late September trade crowds for unfinished alpine access and cooler weather. Winter is a short, quiet trip on the west side only.
This page is a month-by-month planning table, with notes for the 2027 season, built from NPS road history, NPS season pages, NOAA/NCEI climate normals for West Glacier (station USC00248809), and NPS visitation data. The park has not announced 2027 vehicle-reservation or shuttle rules as of October 28, 2026. Treat summer access rules as unsettled until NPS posts them, and watch the NPS Glacier news page for the announcement.

Quick pick: which season fits your trip
| If you want… | Aim for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Full Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass, most trails open | Late July–August | Highest crowds; NPS says July and August are the busiest months |
| A chance at the road with fewer people | Mid- to late September | Alpine section can close early in storms; services wind down |
| Lower elevations, fewer people, no Logan Pass crossing | May or early June | Plowing still underway; high trails under snow |
| Snow, quiet roads, skiing/snowshoeing near Lake McDonald | December–March | Most of the park closed to cars; almost no in-park lodging |
| Shoulder lodging rates outside the park | Late May–mid-June, or after Labor Day | Confirm which lodges and campgrounds are open |
Crowd labels below follow NPS guidance that May–September is busy and July–August are the peak months, and the 2025 recreation-visit counts come from the NPS Stats API. Road and service notes mix typical seasonal patterns from NPS pages with 2027-specific construction closures called out in bold.

Going-to-the-Sun Road: when it usually opens
There is no fixed opening day. Plowing starts in early April. NPS says Logan Pass typically opens between mid-June and early July, and crews work across about 40 avalanche paths (NPS, Feb. 18, 2026). The road is open year-round near the West Entrance, weather permitting (NPS Directions).
Recent full openings over Logan Pass:
| Year | Opened | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | June 22 | Highline still closed for snow on opening day | NPS |
| 2025 | June 16 | Highline still closed for snow on opening day | NPS |
| 2024 | June 22 | Highline still closed for snow on opening day | NPS |
| 2023 | June 13 | Earliest since 2005, per the park | NPS |
| 2022 | July 13 | Exceptional avalanche year | NPS historic table |
| 2021 | June 25 | — | NPS historic table |
| 2020 | July 13 | Late COVID-19 opening; open only from the West Entrance to Rising Sun, and a portion stayed closed all season (a first, per NPS) | NPS historic table |
| 2019–2017 | June 22, June 22, June 28 | — | NPS historic table |
Over those ten years the road opened between June 13 and July 13, and in seven of them by June 25. The alpine section typically stays open until about the third Monday in October, weather permitting (NPS Directions). Weather often cuts it short. For live status, text GNPROADS to 333111.
Vehicle size limits (year-round rule on the alpine section): vehicles and combinations longer than 21 feet (including bumpers) or wider than 8 feet (including mirrors) are prohibited between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun. Vehicles over 10 feet tall may have difficulty westbound from Logan Pass to The Loop because of rock overhangs—that height figure is a caution, not a ban (NPS Directions, updated May 7, 2026). Most ordinary rental cars and SUVs fit, but check your exact vehicle’s length and mirror-to-mirror width; large passenger vans can exceed the limits.
Weather normals (West Glacier)
NPS warns that Glacier weather is highly variable, that the east side is often cooler and windier, and that it is generally 10–15°F cooler at Logan Pass than in the valleys (NPS Weather). Normals below are NCEI / NOAA 1991–2020 monthly normals for station USC00248809 (W GLACIER, MT US), about 3,150 ft:

Crowds: what official figures show
In its systemwide 2025 visitation release, NPS listed Glacier National Park at 3,136,557 recreation visits, 10th among national parks (NPS, March 13, 2026). The NPS Stats API shows how those visits were spread across 2025: 765,061 in July and 718,766 in August, together about 47% of the year, then 576,577 in June, 552,479 in September and a sharp drop to 127,537 in October. January and February had fewer than 20,000 each.
NPS states that May through September is the busy season, and that July and August are the busiest of all (NPS Current Conditions). Annual totals are not the same as “how full is Logan Pass at 10 a.m.,” but they confirm Glacier remains a high-volume summer park. If you want the full road with less competition for parking, late September is the usual compromise—accepting that a storm can close the alpine section early.
2027 construction closures to plan around
These are separate from whatever reservation or shuttle system NPS announces:
- St. Mary Campground — closed to all camping January 1–June 30, 2027 for construction (NPS campground operating description). The project-work page also notes water-system work at St. Mary Campground and Visitor Center from fall 2026 into spring 2027 (NPS project work, updated Sept. 15, 2026).
- Two Medicine Road — scheduled by NPS to close at Highway 49 beginning mid- to late September 2026 for a multi-year rehab scheduled through late 2027, possibly into 2028. Two Medicine Campground was closed for all of 2026 (NPS project work).
- Inside North Fork Road — a full closure planned from the Polebridge Ranger Station toward Logging Creek beginning October 2026 for water-system work; Bowman and Kintla lake access were not affected; remaining restoration expected by summer 2027 (NPS project work).
Re-check the project work page before you lock an east-side or North Fork itinerary.
Where to stay by season
- Peak summer (Jul–Aug): West Glacier, Apgar, Columbia Falls, Whitefish and Kalispell on the west; St. Mary, Babb and East Glacier Park on the east. Rooms book early. Compare options in Where to Stay Near Glacier. To check hotels for your dates: hotels in West Glacier on Expedia, hotels in Whitefish on Expedia, or hotels in St. Mary or East Glacier Park on Expedia. For a house or condo in the Flathead Valley: vacation rentals in the Flathead Valley on Vrbo.
- Shoulder (late May–June, September): More availability outside the park; confirm which in-park lodges are open. St. Mary Campground will not be an option for the first half of 2027.
- Winter: No in-park lodging. Stay in the Flathead Valley and day-trip to Lake McDonald. See Kalispell & Flathead cost of living if you are also scouting a move, and the Whitefish town page for the ski-town base.
Flying in? Glacier Park International (FCA) near Kalispell is about 30 miles from the West Entrance (NPS Directions). Compare rental cars at FCA.
If you would rather leave the driving and permits to a guide, compare a guided west-side Glacier driving tour from West Glacier. That is a west-side tour from West Glacier. Check the listing’s itinerary for exactly what it covers, and confirm the operator is authorized to work in the park.
Month-by-month detail
January–March (winter)
Drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road only from West Glacier to Lake McDonald Lodge, weather permitting. Apgar Visitor Center is open weekends; St. Mary and Logan Pass visitor centers are closed. Loop B at Apgar Campground offers primitive camping (vault toilet, no running water), first-come, first-served. Ranger-led snowshoe walks run on winter weekends; unguided ski and snowshoe routes include the unplowed GTSR beyond Lake McDonald Lodge (NPS Visiting in Winter). St. Mary Campground is closed for construction from Jan. 1, 2027.
April–May (spring)
Plowing is the story. East-side plow work starts in late March; GTSR plowing is the focus by early April and can take two and a half to three months. Lower elevations often melt out by late April; high trails can stay under snow into July (NPS Visiting in Spring). Most concession services reopen late May to early June. By early May, Apgar Campground typically returns to full service. Do not plan on St. Mary Campground before July 1, 2027.
June (early summer)
This is the gamble month for Logan Pass. Recent openings fell between mid-June and mid-July. Even after the road opens, the Highline Trail has still been closed by snow on opening day in 2024, 2025 and 2026. June is also one of the wetter months at West Glacier. Watch the park news page for the 2027 operations announcement—2026’s came on February 18.
July–August (peak)
Full road access is the norm. These are the two busiest months. In 2026 (labeled as 2026, not confirmed for 2027), NPS ran a ticketed Logan Pass express shuttle and a three-hour parking limit at Logan Pass from July 1 through Labor Day, with no vehicle reservations anywhere in the park (NPS Visiting Logan Pass in 2026). Whatever 2027 uses, expect full parking lots by mid-morning on the popular trailheads. Bring a backup hike below the alpine zone.
September–October (fall)
Visitation stays high in September (552,479 recreation visits in 2025) then falls sharply in October (127,537). Services taper after Labor Day. The alpine road’s target close is around the third Monday in October, but snow and rockfall often win earlier—temporary closures hit the alpine section in September and October 2026. Confirm Two Medicine Road status before building a Two Medicine day into a 2027 fall trip.
November–December (late fall / early winter)
Back to the winter road footprint. Holiday weeks fill Flathead Valley hotels even when the park is quiet. Check MDT 511 for US 2 and valley highways.
