This is a sourced list, not a ranked “best of.” Every restaurant below was checked against its own website (or, for on-mountain venues, Whitefish Mountain Resort’s official dining page) on October 28, 2026. We do not invent reviews, tasting notes, quotes or first-person tasting claims. Cuisine, neighborhood and reservation notes come from those pages. Hours and menus change—use the linked official page for what is open the day you go. We do not quote prices.
Whitefish sits in the Flathead Valley about 27 miles from Glacier’s West Entrance (Whitefish guide). City meals may include the 3% city resort tax; mountain venues may fall under the separate Big Mountain Resort Area District tax (City of Whitefish; BMRAD Ordinance 2024-1 §5; BMRAD FAQ). Lodging and tours: hotels in Whitefish on Expedia; vacation rentals in Whitefish on Vrbo; rental cars at FCA.
How this list was assembled
- Started from visitor-facing official pages (resort dining directory; individual restaurant sites).
- Kept only places whose official page loaded and described a Whitefish (or Whitefish Mountain Resort) location.
- Grouped by useful trip categories: breakfast / coffee, downtown dinner, mountain / ski-hill dining.
- Omitted places we could not verify on an official page in this pass (even if they appear on third-party maps).
- Flagged seasonal closures that the operator posted on the check date.

On and near Whitefish Mountain Resort
Whitefish Mountain Resort lists mountain dining on its Dining & Après page. Several venues were marked closed for the season on that page when checked in late October 2026; Buchanan’s posted a separate fall closure. Ski season for 2026-27 is scheduled Dec. 4, 2026 – Apr. 4, 2027, conditions permitting (WMR Hours & Dates). Re-check the dining page after opening day.
Summit House (resort-operated)
Walk-up food counter and full-service bar at the 6,817-ft summit, with three floors of indoor seating and an outdoor deck (WMR Dining). Seasonal.
Base Lodge food court & bars (resort-operated)
Third-floor food court (pizza, burgers, stir-fries), full-service bar and coffee bar near rentals and retail (WMR Dining). Seasonal.
Ed & Mully’s (resort-operated)
Village lunch spot with counter service, full-service bar and fireplace (WMR Dining). Seasonal.
Hellroaring Saloon & Eatery (independent)
A Whitefish restaurant and bar in the historic chalet on the mountain; the site says it has served the mountain since 1983. Independent operator. Official site said open December 4 for the coming winter when checked (hellroaringwhitefish.com; also linked from WMR Dining). Address listed as 3910 Big Mountain Road.
The Bierstube (independent)
Après bar with food, noted on the resort dining page as independently owned; contact phone listed there (WMR Dining). Confirm hours with the operator.
Buchanan’s Chop House & Whisky Bar (independent)
Chophouse and whisky bar on the mountain (3824 Big Mountain Rd.). Official site posted closed Oct. 26 – Dec. 4, 2026, with winter return after that window; reservations recommended when open (buchananswf.com; also on WMR Dining).
Practical notes for Glacier travelers
- Resort tax: City restaurants generally collect the city 3% resort tax; mountain businesses may collect the Big Mountain district 3% instead or as well, depending on location (City of Whitefish; BMRAD Ordinance 2024-1 §5; BMRAD FAQ).
- Seasonality: On-mountain rooms track the ski and summer activity calendar. Downtown breakfast rooms are the steadiest year-round bet for early Amtrak arrivals (the resort says the train from the west arrives in Whitefish around 7 a.m.—confirm times for your date on Amtrak.com).
- Park days: If you are driving to Glacier from Whitefish, grab breakfast downtown and pack lunch, or plan dinner back in town after the West Entrance. Tour option: a guided west-side Glacier driving tour from West Glacier (west side only; not Going-to-the-Sun Road).
