January is deep winter across Montana: ski resorts are in full operation, Yellowstone’s oversnow season is underway, the Gardiner–Cooke City road remains the only wheeled route through the park, and Glacier stays on its winter road and visitor-center schedule. Valley airport normals put average highs in the low 30s°F (Billings a bit milder; West Yellowstone colder), with short daylight—about 9 hours by mid-month at Bozeman latitudes (NCEI 1991–2020 normals).

Pair this with Montana in December for the holiday lead-in. Deeper guides: Yellowstone in winter from Montana, Montana ski resorts compared, Big Sky things to do, West Yellowstone, Whitefish, and Montana hot springs.

Daylight and packing

Daylight lengthens slowly after the solstice. Mid-January at Bozeman’s latitude (~45.7°N) is about 9 hours (calculated from sunrise and sunset geometry); Kalispell (~48.2°N) stays a little shorter. Outdoor schedules still favor midday.

Packing (general): insulating layers, wind/waterproof shell, warm extremities gear, ice traction for sidewalks and boardwalks, and cold-weather car kit items as recommended by trip planners and MDT traveler pages. NPS stresses traction aids near thermal boardwalks (NPS). Not a personal packing endorsement.

Are ski resorts open all of January?
Resorts that posted 2026–27 seasons (Big Sky, Whitefish, Bridger Bowl, Red Lodge, and others in the comparison table) list January inside their operating windows, weather and conditions permitting—always check the resort’s current status page.

What’s open at Glacier in January?
Plowed access to Lake McDonald Lodge area, weekend Apgar Visitor Center hours as posted, and winter recreation on unplowed roads/trails (NPS).
