The easiest way to plan a Montana ski trip is to pick your airport first, because each of the main ski regions is served by one. Bozeman’s airport (BZN) serves Big Sky and Bridger Bowl. Glacier Park International (FCA) near Kalispell serves Whitefish Mountain Resort. Billings (BIL) is the gateway for Red Lodge Mountain, and Missoula (MSO) for Montana Snowbowl. Once you know your base, the rest of the trip (where to stay, whether you need a car, what to do on a rest day) mostly follows.

This page is the “how do I plan it” half of our ski coverage. Our ski resort comparison is the “which mountain” half: acres, vertical, lifts, pass access and opening dates for every major Montana ski area. We don’t repeat that table here, and we don’t list lift-ticket or lodging prices, because they change by date. Check each resort’s own ticket page.

General travel information only, not driving, safety or financial advice. Confirm schedules, road status and opening dates with the linked official sources before you go.

Step 1: Pick a base by airport

Routing estimates come from the public OSRM router, checked Nov. 4, 2026, and assume clear roads. Winter weather adds time.

Nonstop flights, as each airport lists them

Each airport splits its nonstops into year-round and seasonal routes. A “seasonal” label doesn’t say which season, so check the airline’s schedule for your dates.

Lists as posted on each airport’s site on Nov. 4, 2026. The Billings list comes from an FAQ page that shows no date, so treat it as the least current. Routes change; confirm with the airline.

The bottom line: BZN lists the most nonstop destinations of the four airports. Whitefish Mountain Resort also notes that its year-round flights from FCA come from Seattle, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, Denver, Phoenix and Las Vegas (Whitefish Mountain Resort).

Step 2: Book in this order

  1. Lodging first. Where you stay decides most of the rest of the trip. For Big Sky, compare hotels in Big Sky on Expedia. For Whitefish, compare hotels in Whitefish on Expedia. For Red Lodge, start with our Red Lodge town page.
  2. Flights, once you know which airport you’re using (see the table above).
  3. Lift tickets or passes. Big Sky says to book lift tickets, lodging, lessons and rentals early “for the best prices” (Big Sky Resort), and Red Lodge Mountain advertises savings for buying 2026-27 lift tickets early (Red Lodge Mountain). If you hold an Ikon or Indy Pass, check which Montana mountains it covers in our comparison.
  4. A rental car, or a confirmed shuttle. Big Sky recommends a rental car from the Bozeman airport “for the most flexibility” and says to book transportation or rental cars well in advance; it also notes that Uber and Lyft are not available in Big Sky (Big Sky Resort).

Big Sky and Bozeman: sample 3-5 day plan

Getting there. Fly into BZN. Big Sky’s Mountain Village is about 52 road miles away, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes in clear conditions (OSRM estimate). Big Sky asks winter drivers to have “appropriate winter tires” (Big Sky Resort). To drive yourself, compare rental cars at Bozeman’s airport (BZN).

Without a car. Skyline Bus runs a low-fare Link between Bozeman and Big Sky and free local service around Big Sky, but it says it does not serve the Bozeman airport. You’d need a taxi or ride-share to one of its Bozeman stops, or one of the private shuttles on BZN’s ground transportation list (Skyline airport info; BZN ground transportation). Skyline’s 2026-27 winter schedule runs Nov. 23, 2026, to April 11, 2027, with buses seven days a week (Skyline winter schedule). In the resort’s Mountain Village, winter shuttles run from the outer parking lots between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. (Big Sky Resort).

A sample plan (a suggestion, not a schedule):

  • Day 1: Fly into BZN, pick up your car or shuttle, and settle in at Big Sky or Bozeman.
  • Days 2-3: Ski Big Sky. It opens Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2026 (Big Sky Resort).
  • Day 4 (optional): Ski Bridger Bowl from a Bozeman base. Bridger Bowl contracts a free bus during its winter operating season, with Bozeman pickups at MSU and at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds Park N Ride lot, which has free parking; check its bus schedule for dates (Bridger Bowl). Or take a non-ski day (below).
  • Day 5: Fly home from BZN.

Where to stay. Staying in Big Sky puts you closest to the lifts; a Bozeman base puts you closer to the airport, Bridger Bowl and town restaurants, with a longer drive to Big Sky. More: Big Sky things to do and the Bozeman town guide.

Whitefish and Glacier: sample 3-5 day plan

Getting there. Fly into FCA (about 30 minutes from the resort, per Whitefish Mountain Resort) or arrive by Amtrak at the Whitefish Depot. The resort says the train from the east arrives around 10 p.m. and the train from the west around 7 a.m. (Whitefish Mountain Resort). The resort “highly recommend[s]” four-wheel or all-wheel drive in winter. You can compare rental cars at Glacier Park International (FCA).

Without a car. The free S.N.O.W. Bus runs between the resort and downtown Whitefish every day of the winter operating season; no tickets are needed (Whitefish Mountain Resort).

A sample plan:

  • Day 1: Arrive at FCA or the Whitefish Depot and stay in town or on the mountain.
  • Days 2-3: Ski Whitefish Mountain Resort. Its 2026-27 season is posted as Friday, Dec. 4, 2026, to Sunday, April 4, 2027, conditions permitting (Whitefish Mountain Resort).
  • Day 4: A Glacier National Park winter day (see below). The resort to West Glacier is about 33 road miles, around an hour (OSRM estimate).
  • Day 5: Fly or ride the train home.

Where to stay. Town lodging keeps you near restaurants and the depot; slopeside lodging keeps you near the lifts. More: our Whitefish travel guide, where to eat in Whitefish and the Whitefish town page.

Red Lodge and Billings: sample 3-4 day plan

Getting there. Fly into BIL. Red Lodge Mountain’s directions run west on I-90 to Laurel (Exit 434), then about 46 miles on U.S. 212 to Red Lodge and up Ski Run Road (Red Lodge Mountain). The resort also names Yellowstone Regional Airport in Cody, Wyoming, as the other closest airport. To drive from Billings, compare rental cars at Billings Logan (BIL).

Without a car. Red Lodge Mountain says Montana Tour, based in Red Lodge, will run a shuttle from town to the ski area on weekends and major holidays (Red Lodge Mountain). The Red Lodge Chamber says most places of interest in town are within walking distance of downtown (Red Lodge Chamber).

A sample plan:

  • Day 1: Fly into BIL and drive about an hour to Red Lodge.
  • Days 2-3: Ski Red Lodge Mountain. Its mountain-info page lists opening day as Friday, Nov. 27, 2026, and says its snowmaking lets it “consistently open in late November”; its planned operating schedule was still “TBA” when we checked on Nov. 4, so confirm days and hours before you book (Red Lodge Mountain).
  • Day 3 or 4: Drive back to BIL and fly home, or add a night in Billings.

More: the Red Lodge town page and the Billings town page.

Missoula: a city base with a local hill

Missoula suits a trip that pairs a city stay with skiing. Montana Snowbowl is about 20 minutes from downtown, and Lost Trail Powder Mountain is about 90 miles south of Missoula and welcomes skiers Thursday to Sunday plus major holidays (Montana Snowbowl; Lost Trail; Lost Trail directions). When we checked on Nov. 4, Snowbowl hadn’t posted 2026-27 dates and Lost Trail’s site showed it closed for the season, so confirm both before you plan around them. More: our comparison and the Missoula town page.

Small local hills

Montana also has small, community-style ski hills, and some are volunteer-run or open only on certain days of the week. Bear Paw Ski Bowl, 29 miles south of Havre, last posted weekend skiing after the new year, snow permitting, and cash only at the hill, but its website is undated, so call (406) 265-8404 to confirm before you go. Turner Mountain near Libby posts Fridays through Sundays. Days, hours and prices for these and six other small hills (as each hill posted them on Nov. 4, 2026) are on our small ski hills page.

Winter driving: what to check

We don’t summarize Montana traction or tire rules here. Instead:

  • Check MDT 511, the Montana Department of Transportation’s traveler map, for road conditions, closures and cameras before each drive. Red Lodge Mountain and the Red Lodge Chamber both point drivers to it, and you can also dial 511 (Red Lodge Chamber).
  • Follow the resorts’ own advice: winter tires for Big Sky (Big Sky Resort) and four- or all-wheel drive for Whitefish (Whitefish Mountain Resort).
  • Leave extra time. Every drive time on this page is a clear-road estimate.
  • Plan on parking filling up. Big Sky says its lots fill on weekends, holidays, event days and powder days (Big Sky Resort), and Bridger Bowl’s free parking is first come, first served, with Lot A reserved for cars carrying three or more people (Bridger Bowl).

Non-ski days

From Big Sky or Bozeman: Yellowstone. Oversnow travel (snowcoach or guided snowmobile) in Yellowstone runs from Dec. 15, 2026, and the road from the North Entrance at Gardiner to Cooke City is the only one generally open to regular cars all year (NPS Park Roads). West Yellowstone is about 57 road miles from Big Sky’s Mountain Village, and Gardiner is about 78 road miles from Bozeman (OSRM estimates). Our Yellowstone in winter from Montana guide covers tours, operators and lodges, and the West Yellowstone guide covers the town. If you’d rather book a guided day out of Big Sky, you can browse Big Sky tours on Viator; check each listing for winter dates.

From Whitefish: Glacier National Park. In winter, Going-to-the-Sun Road is plowed from West Glacier to Lake McDonald Lodge, weather permitting. Apgar Visitor Center is open Saturdays and Sundays in winter, rangers lead snowshoe walks on weekends, and the unplowed road beyond Lake McDonald Lodge is a popular ski and snowshoe route (NPS: Visiting Glacier in Winter). See our Glacier hub and Montana in January.

Anywhere: hot springs. Some Montana hot springs are open year-round. Our Montana hot springs guide lists locations, hours and safety notes, and our Montana hot springs in winter guide covers winter hours, closed days and snowy roads.

Holiday trips. For December events, see Montana in December.

Taxes to expect

Montana has no general sales tax, but lodging pays state lodging taxes, and resort areas such as Big Sky, Whitefish and Red Lodge can add a local resort tax. Rates and sources are in Does Montana have a sales tax?

Frequently asked questions

What airport do you fly into for a Montana ski trip?

Not always. Big Sky recommends a rental car for the most flexibility and notes Uber and Lyft don’t operate in Big Sky (Big Sky Resort). Whitefish has a free S.N.O.W. Bus between town and the resort (Whitefish Mountain Resort), and Bridger Bowl contracts a free winter bus from Bozeman (Bridger Bowl).

Is there a bus from the Bozeman airport to Big Sky?

Not a public one. Skyline Bus says there is currently no public transit to or from the Bozeman airport; private providers are listed on BZN’s site (Skyline; BZN ground transportation).

When do Montana ski resorts open for 2026-27?

Big Sky opens Nov. 25, 2026 (Big Sky Resort); Red Lodge Mountain lists Nov. 27 (Red Lodge Mountain); and Whitefish Mountain Resort posts Dec. 4 (Whitefish). All dates are weather-dependent. Check Bridger Bowl, Montana Snowbowl and Lost Trail directly for their dates, and see the full list.
